Results from Grandmaster Howard’s Taekwon-Do Fun Challenge

Well done to all the boys and girls from the Taekwon-Do Tigers and Dragons classes who took part in our annual Fun Challenge in the Inspire Centre. The children wowed their patents and the judges with how much the have progressed since last year. Master Howard later told the children, ‘Competitions are fun, but they compare you too each other. In Taekwon-Do you need to compare yourself to yourself. Ask yourself, how have I improved since last year? That is the most important thing, because I can see that you have really improved since last year.’ ‘That is the difference between competition and martial arts’.

A special thanks to all the umpires and helpers who gave up their time to make the day a success.

Congratulations to Brona Kelly and David Cleary who were promoted to 9^th kup by examiner Senior Master Phelan 8^th degree. SM Phelan said that he was very happy with their performance and gave both students feedback on how to improve their techniques. The two new yellow tips will now learn the first Taekwon-Do pattern, Chon Ji.

Congratulations to Mr Adam Fox of Grandmaster Howard’s Taekwon-Do School who won a silver medal in power breaking at the European Taekwon-Do Championships in Bled, Slovenia. Mr Fox, who is well known for his breaking ability, was narrowly beaten to the gold by Ioannis Tersenidis of Greece. This is the second silver medal Mr Fox has won in this event, as he also won silver the Euros in Spain in 2000.

Mr Leon McSherry also competed at Europeans Championships in Slovenia in the 4^th degree patterns section. Despite performing two excellent patterns he was unfortunate to be beaten in the first round by the eventual gold medallist, Evgeny Piksaev, from Russia.

Master Howard also attended the event as an international umpire and was centre referee in patterns, sparring and power breaking.

Next year’s Euros are planned for Minsk, Belarus in April/May 2014

Fun Challenge

This is a special class to prepare your child for real tournaments in the future. It is a fun event and is designed to encourage your child to practice their Taekwon-Do at home. It will be held in the Inspire Fitness Centre.

Tigers (6-8 years) Events (10 – 12 pm) (please arrive at 9.45am)

· 4 – Step Block

· Stretching routine –15 seconds to impress the judges with your flexibility.

· Flying side kick – Jump over one hurdle to kick the pad.

· Team sparring

Dragons (9-11 years) Events (12 – 2pm) (please arrive at 11.45am)

· Pattern (of your grade)

· Stretching routine –15 seconds to impress the judges with your flexibility.

· Flying side kick – Jump over two hurdles to kick the pad.

· Team sparring

Safety Equipment

All children will be sparring and will need to bring their gums shields. Boys will need their groin guards.

You child will be put on a team for the team sparring. If they can’t attend please text me to let me know so I can rearrange the team
